A probabilistic approach of flow-balanced network based on Markov chains ArchiMer
Leguerrier, Delphine; Bacher, Cedric; Benoit, Eric; Niquil, Nathalie.
We used Markov chains to assess residence time, first passage time, rare of transfers between compartments, recycling index with a general mathematical formalism. Such a description applies to any flow-balanced system that can be modelled as a series of discrete stages or compartments through which matter flows. We derived a general set of equations from a probabilistic approach and applied them to a food web and a physical system derived from the literature. We therefore analysed preferential pathways of matter and behaviour of these systems and showed how it was possible to build up and exploit indices on the basis of a transition probability matrix describing the network, and to characterize with a generic algorithm: (1) the total indirect relationships...

Capacité trophique du bassin de Marennes-Oléron : couplage d'un modèle de transport particulaire et d'un modèle de croissance de l'huître Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric.
The trophic relationship between a population of cultivated oysters and potential food was modeled in Marennes-Oleron Bay. Coupling the transport process of particulate matter with assimilation by a population of oysters was achieved through a box mode!. Transport between boxes was based on a mass conservation equation. Parameters were derived from volumes of the boxes, tidal movements and residual 110ws between boxes, and were computed from a numerical hydrodynamical model. Consumption, assimilation and respiration terms were put into an energetic budget equation which enabled simulation of growth. A result of the model was the variability of growth along an axis from North to South, which was related to the oysters' accumulated consumption of food....

Comments on "the Kuroshio intermediate water is the major source of nutrients on the East China Sea continental shelf" by Chen (1996) ArchiMer
Liu, Kk.
Chen estimated (Oceanol. Acta 19, 1996) the influxes of water and nutrients from the Kuroshio to the East China Sea shelf separately for the wet and dry periods within a year, based on a steady-state box model: This approach is demonstrated to be flawed in terms of both mathematical rigor and observational evidence. A time-dependent term must be included in the model calculation, if intra-annual variation is to be determined.

Ecosystem Modelling: sensitivity of physical characteristics to spatial box design ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric.
The residence time of the water in different parts of the Marennes-Oléron Bay is one important characteristic of the biological system (Raillard, 1990). For instance, the primary production potentiality of a given area depends on the local turbidity and the residence time of the waters in that area. Further, global assessments of the nitrogen flow between the biological compartments and inflows from the ocean or the Charente river derived from the ecosystem model by Raillard (1990), showed the predominance of the latter term onto the former. A new hydrological model of the Marennes-Oléron Bay yielded two dimensional velocity fields for sorne standard tidallevels: neap-tide, spring-tide, mean tide (Lazur, unpub.). These computations were the basis for the...

Impact of atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic and natural trace metals on Northwestern Mediterranean surface waters: A box model assessment ArchiMer
Heimbuerger, Lars-eric; Migon, Christophe; Cossa, Daniel.
Under stratified oligotrophic conditions (May November), the surface mixed layer of the Northwestern Mediterranean constitutes a homogeneous water volume of 10-30 m depth. In other respects, the mean residence time of Ligurian surface waters (0-200 m) is 102 days. It is therefore possible to quantify the extent to which atmospheric deposition of trace metals affects surface waters. On the basis of literature data on anthropogenic and natural trace metals, we demonstrate that the ratios between total seawater labile atmospheric deposition during 102 days (Delta c) and dissolved TM concentrations in Ligurian surface waters (c) illustrate the impact of atmospheric deposition on surface seawater (Delta c/c). High ratios indicate surface TM enrichments, while...

Modelling nitrogen, primary production and oxygen in a Mediterranean lagoon. Impact of oysters farming and inputs from the watershed ArchiMer
Chapelle, Annie; Menesguen, Alain; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Souchu, Philippe; Mazouni, Nabila; Vaquer, André; Millet, Bertrand.
An ecosystem model based on nitrogen cycling and oxygen has been developed for the Thau lagoon. It takes into account the specific features of this Mediterranean lagoon, a semi-confined system with watershed inputs and oyster farming. The ecosystem model uses currents calculated by a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model and integrated into a box model. This model is compared with a year survey data and used to estimate nitrogen and oxygen fluxes between the different ecosystem compartments. The yearly simulation shows that the ecosystem behavior is driven by meteorological forcing, especially rain which causes watershed inputs. These inputs trigger microphytoplankton growth, which is responsible for new primary production. During dry periods, nitrogen is...

Modelling seasonal dynamics of biomasses and nitrogen contents in a seagrass meadow (Zostera noltii Hornem.): application to the Thau lagoon (French Mediterranean coast) ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Chapelle, Annie; Menesguen, Alain; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Auby, Isabelle.
A numerical deterministic model for a seagrass ecosystem (Zostera noltii meadows) has been developed for the Thau lagoon. It involves both above- and belowground seagrass biomasses, nitrogen quotas and epiphytes. Driving variables are light intensity, wind speed, rain data and water temperature. This seagrass model has been coupled to another biological model in order to simulate the relative contributions of each primary producer to: (i) the total ecosystem production, (ii) the impact on inorganic nitrogen and (iii) the fluxes towards the detritus compartment. As a first step in the modelling of seagrass beds in the Thau lagoon, the model has a vertical structure based on four boxes (a water box on top of, three sediment boxes) and the horizontal...

The Douro estuary (Portugal): a mesotidal salt wedge ArchiMer
Vieira, Mario Ec; Bordalo, Adriano A.
The Douro River drains a large part of the Iberian Peninsula before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean in northern Portugal. Although heavily dammed throughout its course, the Douro forms a mesotidal estuary in the last 22 km. Na data had ever been collected in this estuary prior to 1994. An analysis of salinity data measured once a month in 1994 and current data obtained in the fall of 1994 revealed a salt wedge estuary highly dependent on river discharge: strong vertical salinity stratification under conditions of low runoff, whereas during high river flows the whole estuary became a river. The tide in the fall of 1994 was very close to a standing wave throughout the estuary; the tidal range, as high as 2.8 m at spring tides, was not powerful enough to...
